What Happened to Getting 'The Skinny?'

I was at Wendy's when I first learned what a calorie was. My dad took me and a friend for celebratory burgers and fries after losing a soccer match (we were still winners at life).
''I wonder how many calories are in this,'' said my friend, examining a limp fry. At first I was excited about what a calorie was, thinking it was a really cool term only related to potatoes. I was wrong.

Now, consuming way more calories than I should (gelato is the culprit), there is a new term on the block: fat. Many people are unfortunately too familiar with it, but don't know what it looks like in its natural form. But if you ride the subway in New York, you're in luck! The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene just released new subway ads that feature human fat being poured out of a soda can. And yes, this is fat not fiction.

Personally, I do not think it is a secret that processed foods and beverages that are high in sugar are causes of weight gain. Everyone knows. It is a personal choice whether you want to care or not. I don't need to be slammed with disgusting images on my way uptown (there are enough of those in subways already).  Is this campaign necessary or just annoying? Chew on it before spitting out a response...

  1. This is a really interesting post. Fast food and processed foods is sad to say but its apart of the American culture. Everywhere you go, most likely there will be fast food resturant staring at you and like you said its your choice to go in. I remember a couple years back, there was a news report about some girl trying to sue McDonalds because the food made her fat. Umm.... this girl cant be the sharpest tack in the box. I dont think Ronald McDonald forced this girl to eat the food; she chose to go and eat the food day after day. Did she not see that coming? But I also agree that eating is a personal choice and there shouldnt be digusting advertisements effecting our choices. People should know that eating bigmacs for a month is not good for you. I mean its common sense. The movie "Super Size Me" shows the affects of what happens if you eat fast food for a month. The results were not good obviously. For me personally, living here in Italy for the semester has really opened my eyes to food. Food here is more natural and organic and i think it tastes a hell of a lot better than processed foods. My food and culture teacher said that "we are what we eat and that our body is a machine and in order for it t run well we need to respect it and feed it right". I try to eat healthy but sometimes there is nothing wrong with getting a whopper or something
